Text editors are an essential tool for writing syntax for statistical software packages efficiently and effectively. The default packages available on Windows (Notepad and WordPad) are not sufficient for serious programming. My preferred text editor is currently Ultra Edit. Other editors commonly used among social science researchers include MultiEdit and TextPad. A complete list of editors and comparisons among them can be found on Wikipedia.
